TAURANGA.

Saturday. A smart capture was effected last night by Sergeant Kidd, of the police. A native stole a cash box, containing about £50, from the store of George Gardiner. Information was given to the police at 11. Kidd immediately started for the kaianga of the suspected thief by water, distance about five miles; He captured him playing cards in a whare, the greater part of the cash being, on his person. A suit of clothes, bottles of rum, and other goods had been purchased with the proceeds of the theft.

A fire occurred at Cook's Tauranga Hotel last night by the bursting of a kerosene lamp, but owing to the promptitude of Mr A. Asher in extinguishing the same the consequences were not serious.
