Thames Borough Council.

A special meeting @f the Council was held at the Borough Council Chambers this morning. Present—The Mayor, Crs Head, Eenshaw, Wilson, McGowan.

THE RECREATION GROUND. ' Tbe following letter was read from Mr Thomas Spencer :—

_ Parawai, June Ist, 1878, To the Major and Councillors, Borough of Thames.—(Jentleinen, —I beg to' roknowledge tho r ce:pt of your letter of the 30th insf., offering me £50 per acre for the-Parawai gardens, as described by you, which contains over 30 acres. '1 his offer I must respectfully decline, as it does not nearly approach its present value. I am, however, willing to cell the land in question for the sum of £ ICO per acre, with all housrs, buildings, &c, as they stud, except the buildings and machinery at the bridge ; these I world remove. This inincludes the valuable water right from the domestic supp!j already laid on to the estate. I should be sorry to see th» place appropx'iated to any other purpose than a recreation ground, for which it w; 3 originally laid out at great expense, and I nifW this offer in order that the public may secure it, as no better spot could be chosan for aeclima^r.ation purposes. —I remain, Gentlemen, yours, &c, &C, THO3. SPENCSr

Cr Read, as seconder of the motion making theoffer of £50 per acre to Mr Spencer, said he would more that Mr Spencer's offer be not entertained. Cr McGowan moved that the Mayor, Cr Renshaw, and the mover be a Committee to confer with Mr Murdock, with a view to having a larger portion of ground than he now offers; and ,? enquire about other pieces of land, md report to the Council. This was seconded by Cr Bead, and Carried unanimously, rid the Council adj6un?ed-.*__
