Thursday.

A circi^ar has been sent to all the Government departments to the effect that it has come under the notice of the Government that subordinate officers of the Government have been in the habit of sending out Government advertisements to papers, and the Government therefore notify that in future all Government advertisements must be signed by a Minister of the department.

A Gazette to-night has fixed the ordinary meetings of the Auckland District Liind Board for every alternate Thursday in each month.

Dr Purchas is appointed a Justice of the Peace. .

This d*y.

At the full Court of Appeal this morning judgment was delivered in the Otago gold stealing case, Begina against Brown, which has a large bearing on partnership cases. The prisoner, Henry Brown; was indicted i \ Queenstown, Otago, for steal* ing. and embezzling 64 ounces of gold, the partnership property of himself and John Mellor. At the iriel prisoner's counsel demurred to the indictment, stating that he relied upon a judgment given by Mr Justice Bichmond at Nelson, in April, 1872, on a similar case, holding that under the "Larceny Act Amendment Act, 1870," a partner could not be indicted for stealing partnership property ; in other words, holding that the Act of 1870 was a dead letter; The Chief Justice held that the first count in the indictment was good, but that the second, third, and fourth were bad. All the other Judges read written judgments concurring with that of the Chief Justice. The demurrer raised to conviction was therefore overruled.
