OAMARU.

Wednesday.

, Young Maitland, who was injured in the coach accident yesterday, died this morning. He was a son of J. P. Maitland. He was on his way to school in Christchurch. His father and mother arrived here just in time to see their son die. Goddard, the driver, has been insensible all day, but hopes are entertained of his recovery. An inquest is now being held.

An inquest was held to-day on the bodies of Nicholls and Maitland, who were killed .by the coach accident. Evidence was taken as to the cause of death, and the inquest was then adjourned till the 6th of June, as Goddard (the coach driver) is not yet able to give evidence as to what caused the accident. Goddard is slightly better tonight. The opening meeting of the North Otago Coursing Club took place to-day at the Awainoa estate of the Hon. M. Holmes. It was a great success. Jennison's wfs a Bye. First ties : Fly beat Grey; Spring beat LeEouge; Hamlet beat Handel; Queen Death ran a tye. Second ties: Spring beat Fly; Queen Death beat Hamlet. Third ties : Mr J. D. Kett's be s., Queen Death, beatMrAj Patterson's w. dog, Spring, and won the stakes. The winners of the prizes, we believe^were: first prize, £35, Queen Death; 2nd prize, £25, Spring; two dogs £6 each, Fly and Hamlet; four dogs £3 each, Guy, LeEouge, Handel Tricolour. . :• ■
