WELLINGTON.
Monday. The Government Lave notified by a circular all tenderers for public Works that, in consequence of .the threatening attitude of European affairs, they are not prepared to assume larger liabilities than is absolutely necessary, and postpone accepting any tenders for public worKs until more satisfactory intelligence is received from London relative to financial matters, and the possibility of floating the new loan. It is said that one hundred and fifty thousand pounds worth of works are thus stopped.
This day. Mr Newton has announced that, having been nominated for the Grey Valley during his absence and without His consent, and there not being time to canvass the district, he does not intend to contest the election.
