THAMES COUNTY ACCOUNTS.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib, —In the annual County accounts, published in this day's issue, the local receipts for rates, licencec, &c, amount to £2089 13s 6d, and the official disbursements (placed under In heads) £1737 14s, 3d, leaving a balance of £351 19s 3d for roads and other works. With such a lrrge official expenditure the ratepayers must be father surprised to see the Council endeavor to blind them as to the actual st.te of matters. Why, sir, it is well known that the salaries mount up to far more than £710 15s. Why, then, try to mislead? With respect to the £8885 12s 5s gold duty, and £2701 Government subsidies and large overdrafts, it should not cost 7J per cent, to expend same, provided all works over £50 were let by public tender and properly cerried oat.— 1 am &c,
Alex. Hums.
