HONOR WHERE HONOR IS DUE.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) g rE> —Tour correspondent " Ratepayer," in your issue of this day, states that our late Mayor, Mr Macdonald, gave away all his salary for charitable purposes, &c. Your correspondent should hare stated that he gave away his first year's salary, but not the second. It should be remembered that that was the " ticket which Mr Macdonald got elected on," a most contemptible way, in my opinion, to ascend the ladder of fame.' The Borough in my opinion will be a long time before it gets a more useful and straightforward man for its chief officer than Mr Davies; however, the question to be discussed at the public meeting on Wednesday next is not what our previous Mayors have or have not done, but whether oxir present Mayor's conduct has been consistent with the high position which he holds. If the statement made in your leader is correct, that the Mayor got a free passage to Hamilton and was the guest of the Mayor of Hamilton, then I say his charging the Borough £6 was a most selfish piece of business, and ought, and will, I hope, receive the disapproval of honorable men. As to the inference that the Mayor will expect the Borough to pay the expense attending the public meeting, I cannot believe that our Mayor would disgrace the high office which he holds so much. In'conclusion, I. trust that every burgess who can make it convenient to attend the public meeting will do so, and not be led away by any stamp oratory.—l am, &c, Another Ratbpatee. > Thames, May 13th/1878. [We did not make a statement that the j Mayor got a free pass to and from Hamil- j toe, and that he was the guest of the j Mayor of Hamilton while there. We enquired if such was not the case.—Ep.]
