THE MAYOR AND BIS "EXS."
(To the Editor of the Evening Stab.) Sib,—lt is too bad of " Ratepayer," writing in your issue of yesterday, to exercise " the learned Doctor Mayor " relative to his claiming and taking exs. in addition to a salary. I suppose they were passed by the Council, or the auditors would not have allowed them. I should like " to know, you know " whether these exs. were pcirt of a sum the auditors refused to pass without proper authority, aud that they did pass a sum of money at the last moment—when getting such authority—so says rumour. No.v the Mayor and Town Clerks' expenses are but "dots" to a further overdraft at the bank. I should also like "to know—you know," where the gallant Captain Butt was when these little items were passed, but I hare forgotten, he was shifted, or, it was taken from him —his " Joe Hume" mantle—to the shoulders of Or. Rowe. Eut where was Cr. Rowe at the time ? And where was he* when his motion, relative to the salaries of Borough officials, was to come on ? Fie on all you councillors ! for instead of." gassing " you shbuld have looked more into finance; consider that you had an overdraft of over £70C0 paid off last year,, now you have nearly £2C30 more due. How much of this and other hrge sums has been expended for $ our benefit, •• I should like to know, you know P " Ratepayers, be up and doing ; form a Ratepayers' Association through which your interests can be protected and the selection of good and true men as your representatives.—l am, &c, Another Ratepatee. Shortland, 14th May,'7B. PS.—Why did not the Mayor charge the orthodox £1 Is per diem instead of £1 ? Brodie charges the former. , 4 .
