MANUKAU.
A section of this claim has been taken on tribute by White and party, who, after some two or three months of dead work, are now engaged in the development of the Old Caledonian No. 1 xeef. They are working at a point some 40 feet below the surface of the top of the hill, the stuff being shot down the Manukau shaft to a level coming out to the surface behind the Caledonian company's mill. The lode is at least five feet thick, and colors of gold have been seen in it when breaking down quartz. The tributers commence crushing at the Herald mill last night, the parcel being a trial one of about 10 loads, tip to the present it has been shaping about an ounce, which, from a large lode with cheap means of conveyance, should pay handsomely.
