REPLY TO MR PAYNE.
(To the Editor of the EVENIXG STAB.)
Sie,—lf the public required any further knowledge of the character of Mr Payne, M.8.C.5.E., his production in this morning's paper will supply the want From the language used he certaiuly is a disgrace to his profession, for' all members of his College are, in the first instance, expected to be gentlemen, and his language is more like that which might be used by a boor than by a member of a learned profession. From his own admission the term he would insinuate against me is far more applicable to himself. I also ask Mr Payne if the word defined in the dictionary as a " vile fellow ; one who uses foul and abusive language—a blackguard," is not applicable to him ? His conduct in writing to a newspaper further pourtrays the character as given by the same authority under tbe same word used as a verb, " to revile in scurrilous language." Mr Payne is more to be pitied than blamed for his unfortunate failing in not being able to discriminate between the fact—which he admits—of his refusal twice to go to the Hospital and his subsequent denial that he refused because he had not been officially requested. The display made by Mr Payne abundantly proves that it is possible to be a member of a liberal profession and yet not a gentleman. This letter closes the correspondence as far as I am concerned.—l am, &C, W. McCULLOUGH.
