ALBURNIA.
Hearing of the discovery of something in this mine last night, the definite whereabouts of which no one appeared to know, I went up to the mine to see if there was anything to warrant the rise in the shares. The first place visited was the intermediate drive from the No. 3 winze. This winze, I may mention, is the furthest winze West on the line of reef, and the intermediate drive from it is about 35 feet below the Whau level, the total depth being about 60 feet. I found that the intermediate drive has been extended about 13 feet west, going along on the hanging-wall of the lode, which portion has always carried the richest gold. A shot had been fired in the hanging wall, and though the face was rather dirty, a portion of it was washed and there is a splendid show of gold visible, good large splats and veins of the precious metal being freely scattered all over the face. There is also some splendid copper visible, and the whole face has precisely the same appearance which the lode had near the junction at Whau level. The golden portion of the reef is about 9. inches thick, and on examining the back of the drive I found even a better show than in the face, and it is evident the gold made in the roof. I was informed that the drive from the No. 2 winze is advanced no further than the foot of the No. 3 winze, so if that drive is extended it will soon be proved if the gold goes down to that depth or not. The lode looks very well down there, and there are indications of rich gold there also. The Whau level drive is only about a dozen feet ahead of the intermediate drive, so that the lode may be said to be intact to the surface. On visiting the west drive Whau level I found that the gold is showing there alio, though by no means as rich as in the intermediate drive. In the No. 2 intermediate drive, 40 feet back from No. 3 winze, specimens'are coming every shift. There is no change in the rise on Battery level, and ditto with respect to other
parts of the mine. Oa reaching the surface the manager showed me some of the stones from the last shot in the new find, and it was certainly as good aB some of the best I have seen come out of the mine. The manager has a high opinion of the show. He informed me that there would not be another breaking down till Friday again. > The following is the mine manager's telegram to the directors:—" 401bs specimens No. 3 winze west. Gold still showing.—B. Gbibble." Oldrey's tribute party, who have a block on the battery level, have just finished cleaning out a drive, and have crushed a parcel of quartz for the yield of 3ozs 12dwts gold.
