United Pumping Association.
A meeting of the directors of the Thames United Pumping Association and members of the County and Borough Councils of the Thames was held yesterday. Dr Campbell presided. A letter from the Tuames County Council, containing the following resolution, was laid before the • meeting : —" That frequent representations having been made to the companies interested in prospecting as to the necessity of the drives carried on by this Council being availed of by the companies by prospecting, and such representations having had no effect so far as the south drive is concerned, it is considered advisable to discontinue that drive." A considerable discussion emued, and the following resolutions were arrived at:—" That it appears of the first importance that the arrange* mehts under which the southern drive was undertaken should be continued, and the drive pushed on with all possible expedition, in order to drain the mines on the Waiotahi (Waio • Karaka) flat. That this meeting* fully agrees with the County Council that the several mines
interested should properly prospect all reefs cut in the drire which afford a fair prospect of success. That, as a differeace of opinion appears to exist to whether nr;y such reeis have been cufc, a proper investigation and enquiry should be undertaken in order to settle the point. That such investigation and enquiry should be undertaken by three persons—one to be named by the County Council, one by the Pumping Association, and a third by the two so appointed. That on receiving the report of the persons so appointed, another meeting be held to deter* mine the course to pursue to enforce such prospecting as may be recommended." A copy of the resolutions was ordered to be forwarded to Mr Brodie (the chairtnain of the Thames County Council), Messrs Bagnall and Thorburn (members of the Thames County Council), Mr J. Reid, (Thames Borough Council), Mr". Workman (director Golden Crown), Mr »/. Howe (Prince imperial). Mr Brigham (Tookeyj, Mr C. tt. Stone (Waiotabi), Mr Lennox (Caledonian), Mr Whitaker (Imperial Orowu). A meeting of the County Council will be held next week, nnd the whole matter will be taken into consideration. One scheme suggested was that the Caledonian, Golden Crown, Manukau, Cure, and Waiotahi Companies should unite in pushing in a drire on one of the reefs up the Waiotahi Spur from the 640 feet level to the defined belt of gold-bearing country, as the present drive, being chiefly for drainage purposes, does not extend to that region. It is, estimated that the projecled drive will have- to be extended 600 feet to reach the golden belt.
