PIAKO.

The Vanguard cross-cut is now in upwards of 140 feet, and continues to be in a splendid chanuel of country—easy to work, and highly favorable to the existtence of a gold-bearing lode. No quartz of any consequence has been come on since the leader which I referred to in my last reporj, but the first of the lodes which tlie cross-cut was put in to intersect should soon be in the face. In consequence' of the good prospects met with by Carnie and party, tributers at the No 8 level, the manager has recently put on a few hands to cross-cut the No. 2 (main) lode, and has picked up Carnis's leader. A trial parcel of eight loads of stuff from it is undergoing process of treatment at Ferry's mill, and it is likely to yield satisfactorily. The manager is also crushing a 10 ton lot at the same battery from the shaft leader at No. 6 level.

Of the tributers, several parties have now got parcels at the mill. Fletcher and party (Bird in Hand) are crushing 30 or 40 loads at Bull* battery, and expect a fair return. Langford and party (Piako), have about 25 loads also at the same mill, while Ferguson and party are crushing a parcel of 10 loads at Pery's mill. Carnie and party, whose last crushing I am informed gave them over £6 per week per man, will be crushing shortly. Their block is between the Nos. 8 and 7 levels, and is about 60 feet long. The reef is some 18 inches wide and is really a fine looking body of stone.
