THE WEEK.

Baring the week, for want of a better subject, perhaps, the stoppage of the Big Pump has been freely discussed, and many seem to arrive at the conclusion that such a thing would be disastrous to the field from the number of mines it would stop, and the large number of men it would throw out of work. The Galedonian, Tookey, Cure, Kurahui Hill, and erentually the Moanatairi (low levels), Old Golden Calf, Morning • Star, Waiotahi, and other mines would be forced to suspend operations; those mines - connected with the pumping shaft'perhaps as much in consequence of the gas as the water. There is no doubt about it but that the mines beneßtted should contribute more liberally to the maintenance of the Pump; but by whatever means, if the mining operations on the flat are to be kept going, pumping operations must be sustained.. To discover a means to do this without the aid of the gold duty is now the problem of the hour, and it is to be hoped that in the interests of the com* munity at large that it will be solved satisfactorily. The partial stoppage of operations at Waitekauri has thrown the Ohinemuri goldfield into a state of languor, which it is to be hoped it will soon recover. At best the operations in the Waitekauri mine are only surface works. Perhaps a little deep sinking would be beneficial. The Owharoa appears to be pretty lively through the Smile of Fortune obtaining a little gold. Several parties are now working. The Alburnia is the only mine that is dividend paying just now with anything like regularity. The directors have declared another dividend.
