;- Strong efforts were made to bring about a compromise between the two Houses of Legislature, but of no avail, although there was a strong inclination to do to on both sides.
The Governor and the Commissioners' of Audit have signed the necessary warrants empowering expenditure under the 45th section of the Constitution Act.
The Governor has received another telegram from the Colonial Ofiice, but strictly private. It is said to be satisfactory as fur as it goes. In the meantime matters go on quietly, and even if no compromise be arrived at, the Government will have £3C3,000 made available to carry on till the end of July.
The Chimborizo arrived after a 42 days' passage, with salmon ova for New Zealand. She brought a large number of passengers.
A tender has been accepted for the Stawell and Horsham railway, 52 miles, at £2270 per mile.
A sub-committee of the Barry testimonial recommend a bronze statue on . a marble pedestal, to be placed first in the public library.
Sir John Coode is at present in Gippa land examining the lake's entrance cv behalf of the Government. He pro ceeds to Sydney shortly, thence home via California.
At the sale of yearlings recently held the different lots averaged—U. A. Finley's, 223 guineas; Philip's, 132 guineas; Gerrati's, 223 guineas. A large number were sold.
The slakes paid over'at the Autumn Meeting amounted to £8083. B. C. Fisher and J. Wilson were the highest winners. The attendance at the meeting was very moderate. The running of First King and Chester in the Leger and Town Plate was the principal attraction. Lady Ellen, who won the .Newmarket, Handicap, was outside as far as the public were concerned, but; some few, aware of her merits, made money.
A murder has been committed at Builardale Forest. A man named Little is the victim. The case at present is surrounded with a good deal of suspicions. One Win. Hayes is in custody. !
A tremendous tornado occurred at Cairns, Northern Queensland. Eight buildings were blown down and others injured. The place is in ruins. No lives were lost.
An order has been promulgated by the Sydney Government in accordance with a resolution of the Assembly prohibiting members acting as land agents.
In Adelaide the approaching general election is occupying attention. The writs will be issued this week. The Premier issues a manifesto of Govern* ment policy' in a tow days. A fire at Hobartown destroyed pro* perty of the value of £12,C00, partly covered by insurance. The loss includes Eisby's saw mills.
