THE COUNTY EXPENDITURE ON DEEP LEVEL TUNNELLING.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Dear Luminary,—ls this a free country ? I think it must be. There cannot be anything more free than the free way our County magnates are dealing oat onr County money. On the whole I find no fault with the energetic style of our head bummer Brodie, even if he is * trifle extravagant in the way of travelling ex'a. He is evidently a man of progresf, but I should like just to "know you know" the nature,of the agreement (if any) under and by which a large sum of public money has been lately spent in pumping water and driving levels in the deep ground down the Big Pump shaft. It seems to mo we are landed in a pretty mess, and I pity Mr Brodie when he stand* up to be crossexamined by "Brother Workmen" in re this gigantic job. Look to it, Mr Brodie, and look early; your sins will find even you out. Take my tip—get your friend Sir George to manufacture a Mining Inspector without a day's delay, if for nothing else than for the special purpose , of cancelling the licenses of those bogus i companies in whose interests certain un- j wholesome things have been done. The vgly past may be easiest forgot in con* temptation of a cleaner future. Therefore step out boldly and make the best of a very bad job; and even now a fluke or so may pull us all through. Dear Star, I confess I am at a loss to see through this fog; it is a big fix, anyhow. But this much is certain, no pusillanimous half*
measures will mend onr case,—Yours in sorrow, Batkaym. Grahamstown, Thames, New Zealand, March Bth, 1876.
