Some time ago our contemporary stated positively that Captain Goldsmith had been re-appointed to the office of Mining Inspector, vacant by the resignation of Mr A. Aitken. We were incredulous as to the correctness of this information, more especially as we had been assured by one who was believed to bo in the confidence of the present administration that suchreappointment was not contemplated. We are to-day in a position to state on undoubted authority that no such appointment has been made, and we are assured that it is not likely to be. It is probable that the temporary arrangement indicated in these columns a few weeks ago as likely to be resorted to will be carried out by the Government.
