The police are trying proceedings against grocers for selling local made wines, which have hitherto been looked upon as Good Templar drinks, but which analysis has prorcd to contain 15 per cent, of alcohol, - , An auction sale to-day of the freehold of the Borough Hotel, High street, the lease of which expires in December, 1878, was sold for £6500. Ihe freehold of Carl's Empire Hotel, High: street, 30 feet by 105 feet, at a lease of £1, per foot, expiring June, 1882, was sold for £5100. The occupier of the hotel was the purchaser in each case. - - This day. At four o'clock this morning a large boarding • house, adjoining Mapleson's Southern Hotel,, was destroyed by fire. The insurances are not yet known. Several buildings in the vicinity had a narrow escape.
