The deplorable event of yesterday—the drowning under such peculiar circum* stances of young Reddish from the Naval Cadets' boat—has caused deep grief in the family of the deceased, and a feeling of gloom amongst his comrades by whom he appears to have been well liked and I respected. If it can soften the blow to the bereaved parents, they may be assured of widespread sympathy under their affliction. Nothing appears to have been neglected at the time of the accident which could have led lo the deceased's recovery. Two pf the lads plunged into the. water at the risk of their own lives in ordvr to render asI tistance to their comrade; and their names are mentioned with credit in the proceedings at the inquest;, There are others, however, who behaved well after the unfortunate occurrence, namely, the bushmen attached to the Kauraki Saw Mill, who as soon as they heard of the necident went to assist fa (recovering the body—two of them, Messrs Palmer and Clark, being conspicuously deserting of credit. Thcee two men, we hear, dragged the river for an hour and a-half, and, when they had suepeeded in recovering the body, lost no iiqje in bringing it to Shortland. Disinterested /conduct of this character is deserving of recognition. We are inclined to the opinion that a poai cjoriem examination of the unfortunate deceased's body might hare afforded some satisfac-
Tory clue to the cause of his sudden jumping into the water. It is a small matter however. There is no suspicion of the melancholy affair being other than accidental; but the stale of deceased's vital organs might have disclosed a condition to account in some measure for the involuntary act.
