The Wairarapa Standard states on authority that the Government hare in contemplation the publication twice daily of a circular detailing the business transacted or to be transacted. As the conductors of the Wairarapa Standard are said to enjoy the confidence of the Premier, it may be taken for granted that the " authority " for making such a statement is reliable. We are glad to hear of this proposal of the Government, and we believe it will be a source of gratification to all members of local bodies and others who take an interest in public business. Formerly Ministers hare been in the habit of communicating the business ot the Cabinet to favored newspapers, as a sort of quid pro quo for their support. This custom has been prolific of scandal, besides which it was manifestly unfair to journalists who offered any opposition to Ministers, the information vouchsafed by Ministers, Under Secretaries, and other persons in authority being of an exclusive character, and sometimes of such a ralue as to give to favored newspapers a position to which they could not hare attnined on their own merits. If the proposal indicated by the Wairarapa Standard be carried out, it will show on the part of the Government a disposition to be impartial as regards the dissemination of news amongst the Press, while it should have the effect of suppressing many of the canards now propagated by unprincipled journalists.
