RETROSPECT OF 1877.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib, —I am glad that you have published the Home News' "Betrospect for 1877." You have, by so doing, given the Thames people something that will enlighten them as to passing ominous eventi in the Old World, calmly and carefully selected. I have always looked upon the Home News as the best digest of Old World doings, there is nothing sensational about it, it may be generally depended on as truthful. It would be well if .your readers would preserve the copies of your paper containing that Betrospect^ and compare it with the one that is certain to be published for 1878, when that eventful year now passing is at an end, they will , then find now truthful are many of the forebodings of tha Betrospect you publish. It would be well also if as many as can took in the Home News regularly. It will be /very interesting this year, we we may be sure of that, and will give a large amount of truthful information upon the social, political, and religious events of these exciting times. It is a pity that good, sound periodical literature is so taxed in this colony. At the Cape I obtained English periodicals from the leading- bookseller of Cape Town at about five per cent, on London publishing prices, while here one has to pay on an average double the English prices. Why it should be so I know not, and would like to be informed. Certainly it ought not to be so,.when there is so much fuss made about the education of the community. To me it seems an. anomaly, if the people are to be enlightened, that the means of that enlightenment should be charged such an enormous price for. tf That tbe ioul be without knowledge i 8 not good," then good, sound knowledge should be obtained as cheaply as possible. —I am, &c, "*- Wimiam Wood.
