OLD SIAM.

Waite and party, the shareholders of this claim, are working away v with fair prospects of success. At present they are engaged extending a low level drive down at the level of the Shellback creek. This drive is proceeding in the direction of the Siam shaft, which it is intended to drain. Some years ago, when this claim was worked before, the shareholders put down the shaft a distance of 30 feet, and took out some 301 bs of specimen stone from the very bottom, when water came in and forced them not only to cease sinking the shaft, but also to "jack up" the claim. The. drive the present share* holder.] are putting in may be expected to cut the water shortly, as it is being sut in on a lode. Two lodes are at the isposalof the shareholders, one of which is no less than 10 feet thick, while the other is about 2 feet. Some gold has been seen in both of these, and if the larger one only yields 7 or Bdwts per ton it will pay handsomely. The dray road up the Shellback creek comes right up to the hopper, and the expenditure of some £40 or £50 by the County Council on it would add greatly to its efficiency, and would doubtless induce many claims to be taken up in the v.'cinity. The chief defect of the road is that several small •lips have occurred which partially block up the track. It is intended to crush a parcel of 10 tons within the next day or two, so that then the shareholders will have a more reliable means ef determining the value of their lodes.
