Tuesday. It is proposed here to fit out an expedition to the New Guinea goldfields, the party to consist of 100 practical miners, and each man to contribute £50. It is estimated that n vessel could be chartered to land them for £1,200, and the remainder would bo set aside for provisions, tools, &c, and the journey to the goldfields. It is proposed to make up the party from Christchurch, Dunedin, Hokitika, and the Thames.
The Soldenes hare left for Wellington, after a most successful season. The Government have again written to the City Council, asking that body to take over the charge of the hospital and also the benevolent institutions. The City Council hare asked for full particulars as to the funds. The Board also ask for particulars of the tenders for railway waggons to be made in the colony and those from home. It is expected that before the next grain season fourteen hundred nag* gons will be added to the rolling stock. This is twice as many as are now within the Canterbury district. This day. Both Times and Press deplore the election of Mr Barton to the Assembly. They say it will be a bad thing for the country in general and Wellington in particular. At a meeting of the New Zealand Ship, ping company, a resolution passed at a previous meeting to borrow money on debentures, was confirmed. Twenty schemes have been submitted for the Christchurch Water Supply. A railway fire brigade is about to be established. At a largely attended meeting at Bangiora a resolution was passed condemning the system of mixed schools.
