The U. M. Court was occupied until late last night on an important civil case, .Borough Council versus Cain, manager of the Timaru Banding and Shipping Service. Plaintiffs contended that the boundary of Ihe Borough extended to low water mark, and all property within (hat limit was liable to pay rates. . Defendant contended that part of the j property in question was built on a railway reserve, and therefore not rateable. The magistrate ultimately decided that the portion of the property on the railway reserve was not liable to rates. The defendant having stated that he was willing to pay a reasonable rate on the reraaiudcr of the property, the case was adjourned for the parties to settle the matter. The Albury races, Mackenzie County, take place to-day; a large number of people.left by the train. Good entries. Weather threatening rain. The committee of the Timaru Boating Club have authorised an order from Sailer, England, for two pair-oared stump out-rigged boats, sijnilaj: to those in use at Christ church,
