BALCLUTHA.

This day.

The new railway bridge was tested by Mr Garruthers, accompanied by Mr Blair, district engineer, and assistant engineers. Three locomotives and six loaded coal trucks were used. The weight waa one hundred and ten tons. Each span was tested carefully. The deflection was from three-eighths to three-quarters of an inch. There wai a permanent set, but when the load passed the bridge it sprang back into it's original level. After each span had been tested a train was run across at the rate of ten miles an hour, when the deflection was only three-eighths of an inch. The test is considered very satisfactory, and shows the work has been faithfully carried out. The bridge consists of seven spans, one hundred and twenty feet each, and one of thirty feet across tho road at the end of the bridge.
