THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, JANUARY 21, 1878.

We.are inclined to the belief thai; rery little credence iis io be attached to the statement of Hie Wellington Argus, contained in our telegrams, to the effect that the Government intend at the end of the present financial year to hand over to County Councils all hospitals within municipalities, and to subsidise them from the consolidated revenue in the proportion of one pound for every pound subscribed. In the first place the Government have no authority to dispose of some of the hospitals within municipalities, nor will they be allowed to interfere with them to the extent of handing them orer to County Councils, In some of tho Jarger cities there are hospital* which

were built nnd entirely supported by the j late Provincial authorities. These insti- ■ tutions, having reverted to the Colonial j Government, may bo disposed of by " handing them over to the County Councils." The Thames district hospital is not the property of the Government, and they cannot dispose of, it. If they could we feel «ure that such a course would be objected to. There are many small districts—municipalities—in tho same position, who would decidedly object to see institutions which have been raised and fostered in their midst, and managed judiciously, taken from them and thoir control given to another body. "We have not much fear oj; the Government attempting such a ffiutg, a disposition having been evinced to give over the control and management of the central hospitals to the City Councils ; and if "lite course indicated by the Argus shall be attempted towards the smaller municipalities, it will meet with determined opposition.
