YOUNG NEW ZEALAND.
The following report has been received from . the mine manager :—Waitekauri, January 13, 1878.—T0 the Directors of ; the Young New Zealand Goldmining Company.—Gentlemen,—ln commencing operations for the new year, I had to put in timber and fill up the slopes, pnjgmm. are aware the reef runs very flat, and is a large body of stone. Consequently, I find it necessary to strip ,a deal of the surface, which goes for filling the stopes. This work will be completed in a day or so; then I will hare a good opportunity of breaking out quartz pretty speedily, and intend keeping eight head of stamps employed instead of four. There was a parcel of quartz in the battery from last year, which has been crushed, and for sixty hours' run, with four head, I obtained 71oz« of amalgam, hot waiter cleaned. The sfone now showing is an improvement on the last broken out.—* Thomas Kn^ebohs.
