MOANATAIRI.

Men are at present employed constructing the wood work for the compressing engine for working the rock drill, and as soon as the pipes have arrived little time will be lost in getting everything ready to start work. I paid a visit to the mine this morning in company with Mr Comer, and on going into the tunnel I found that the manager has men employed repairing the wood work, which at the eastern end was rather out of repair. On going down the shaft I found the contractors working away. The south-east cross-cut is in about 30 feet, and the country yet continues good. In the north*west cross-cut, the former contractors having thrown up the job, the manager has let the contract to a fresh batch, and they having started, the cross-cut is now about 15 feet in length, with the country still pretty hard. I then went down the No. 1 winze, and found that there is no particular change in the" reef, which continues mullocky with a poor show of mineral. The manager informed me that though the single stamper is still going, on it, yet there is very little difference between it and the general stuff, as it yields a little better than an ounce to. the ton. The slide is still going very fiat, .and appears to be getting more horizontal as sinking proceeds, iv fact, the last 5 or 6 feet sunk more closely resembles a slightly inclined drive than a winze.,. There is nothing fresh in the eastern drive. The No. 2 winze in the western- drive is down 8 or 10 feet, and a Windlass and gear has been erected. The reef in this drive looks about the same. Wallis' leader is looking hardly as-well as it has been doing for some time past. Long and party finished their crushing to-day, for the yield of 12ozs 7dwts gold. Groldswortby and party, a new' lot, working, the Pai Mariri block on tribute, crushed a few pounds of specimens yesterday for the yield of s|ozs melted gold.
