A man drowned in Auckland Harbor.
Hr Charles Bowisy missing.
A man fell off Queen street wharf shortly after 9 o'clock on Thursday night and was drowned. Cries for assistance were heard, nnd two watermen promptly got a boat and pulled to the spot whence the cries had proceeded, but they could not find anyone, and it is pretty certain that the man was drowned. What makes the occurrence more sad to Thames people is the fear that the victim was none other than Mr Charles Rowley, who was in Auckland, and was expected to leave by the Lalla liookh on that evening. Rowley had gone to town on business in connection with the Phoenixlease, which.he has shepherded and worked as a " hatter " for the last twelve months. He was seen leaving the bar of the Auckland Hotel about nine o'clock on Thursday evening with the avowed intention of going on board the Lalla Rookh, and we have heard that he was seen on the wharf. When the boat arrived at Shortland yesterday morning Mrs Rowley was surprised to find he was not on board, as he had [ telegraphed that he was coming, and the surprise changed to alarm when she heard that a man had been drowned alongside the steamer on the previous evening. Communication was opened with Auckland, and during yesterday the police searched but could not find him, and last evening telegrams were received which leave little doubt that the unfortunate man who was drowned was Eowley. We should be very glad to find Rowley turning up again, and accounting for his absence, but it is a forlorn hope.
