Quarterly and Annual Licensing Meeting.
The Quarterly and Annual Licensing Meeting for the districts of Thames and Hauraki'was held at the Court House, Shortland, at 12 o'clock noon to-day. There were present'—Captain Fraser, E.M., Chairman, and Messrs Workman and Souter, Commissioners.
Distbict of Thames.
NEW APPLICATIONS FOB OLD HOUSES.
John Bullock, Excelsior Hotel, Shortland. Granted
H. Endres, Shortland Hotel, Shortland Granted. -
Thomas Godkin, Royal Hotel, Tararu. The applicant applied that the fee be reduced, on the. ground, that the house was situated in a remote part. The Chairman said that be understood that the publicans had been referred to the Licensing Commissioners ■to recommend a reduction in their fees, and there appeared to be an impression abroad that they could do ii. He referred them to
the 50th section of the Act of 1871 which showed that it was only in remote districts that a reduction could be made, and even then there was a minimum per annum fixed, and that was £20. He then called upon the President, Secretary or solicitor of the Licensed Victuallers to say any. thing on the matter. When that was settled they would go on With the business.
Mr Macdonald, who had appeared for the Licensed Victuallers Association, addressed the Court, pointing out the injustice of the fees in this provincial district. It was a shame that the publicans in the worst pare of the Borough of Thames should pay double as much as the publicans in the best part of the Borough of Duned'n. He then handed in the following petition, which was reid by the Clerk of the Court:—
" To the Chairman of the Worsaipful the Licensing Court of the licensing district of Borough of Thames, Province of Auckland, in the Colony of New Zealand. The petition of the undersigned hotel-keepers humbly showeth : — That your petitioners have forwaided to His Excellency the Governor a petition praying that the license fee at the Thames may be reduced to the same amount as in the other Goldfields of the Colony, a true copy of v hich is annexed. That the caid petition was refer "ed to the ETon.F. Wh'taker. That a deputation of your petitioners waited on the Hon. F. Whitaker on Friday last. That the Hon. F. Whitaker then intimated that application should first be made to the Licensing Commissioners of the district, and that should they represent and recommend the reduction prayed for that the Government could then exercise the same powers which were used by the Superintendents in like recommendation. Your petitioners, therefore, pray that your most worshipful court will be pleased to represent and recommend the reductions prayed for. And you petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray, &c. C. Cttbtis, A. Butler, J. Peaece, Geo. Symington, B. Eichards, W. Burton. On behalf of the petitioners." The" Chairman said that they would accede to the petition, but he thought they should petition the Government to make a uniform rate all over the colony.
The Commissioners signified that they qxvie acquiesced in what the Chairman had said.
The Chairman said in reference to Grodkin's application that he had once got snubbed for submitting an application for the minimum fee in a part of the Borough. Mr Godkin urged that it was the only place at Tararu, and was much needed for accommodation by people coming in from Tapu and Waikawau. * Application granted, but not reduction in fee.
William Inns, Theatre Royal _ Hotel, Grahamstovm.
The report of the police was not satisfactory. It slated that the house had not been well managed, and the present applicant had not resided on tbe premises since the license was transferred to him.
Mr Macdonald said that he believed there was nothing against the applicant oh the records of the Court.
Mr Bullen stated that the house had been managed by barmaids, and it had been sometimes very disorderly. The applicant said he could not reside in the house since he had got the trans* fer, as the place had been getting shingled. The Chairman asked him if he intended to reside in the house, and was answered in the affirmative. He then said that he had received a letter from a publican asking if one man could hold two licenses, as Curtis of the Pacific did, and Inns was a " wood and water Joey " of Curtis's, who was put in as a cat's paw. Mr Curtis said his son resided on the premises, and he would have taken it out in his son's name only he was not 21 years old. The Bench said they would not grant it to Jnns, as they had been deceived so often, but they would grant it in his son's name.
