QUEEN OF THE MAY.

I visited the mine this morning in company with, the manager. .On reaching the bottom level flatsheet I found that the sinking contractors-, notwithstanding the hard nature of the country, are making fair progress, and have put down the shalt about 25 feet, or perhaps a little more. Bar accidents to the Waio-Karaka pump, I should say that it will take five or six weeks more to put it down" the depth required for opening'out the new level; I went to the drive on the hanging wall reef and found that the contractors are working ahead as usual, the reef keeping its ordinary course, and there ,£P^ not appear to be any striking Seve?al stones were k broken from . the face . for my inspection, and they . h&d a very promising appearance*, being full of brassy looking mine"al which isusually supposed to be a concomitant of gold. We went to the drive on the footwnll lode, and I found jthat no quartz has been broken for a day or so, as the men are employed driving alongside of the reef. The black veins alluded to as being in the face some days ago.have gone into the hanging wall of the lode, but the flow of-'water, .though not in such large quantities as formerly, continues. There is nothing fresh to report from the cross-cut from the bottom level, though work is proceeding as usual. The trial crushings have terminated and the general crushing is shaping for something about the general^average.
