CALEDONIAN.
Since the last breaking pf the reef reported it has not been ' touched, and the contractors are pushing ahead with the contract bow approaching completion. The country is good working ground; and the work is being proceeded with rapidly. The manager informs me that he intends to call for tenders for putting up a rise from the Caledonian No, 1 level to the workings'*on the Otago reef, which are situated about 40 feet perpendicular above the No. 1 level. When this rise is finished it will afford facilities for getting away quartz' and mullock easily. Concerning the Otago lode it has been frequently smmised of late that it is the seme reef which made the Caledonian so famous some years ago. This may be the case, but as yet it is doubtful, and it will take some time to prove the identity of the: lode.
