MOANATAIRI.
I paid a visit to the mine to-day. On going to the winze I found that some stone had been broken down yesterday. I could not see the smallest color of gold, and there' was but little mineral visible. The lode is now at least four feet wide, and contains a large quantity of mullock, there being comparatively little quartz. At present the men are stripping the lode to prepare for another break down. Up in the s.topes on the No. 9, things have a more promising aspect, especially in the middle stope, from wh -cc some 401 bs of good specimens were taken this morning with a show left in the face. I visited the slopes on Wallis' leader, and found that through the day in one place the men employed had obtained some 30 or4olbs of specimen stone which really looked well, some of, them containing belts of gold about half an inch thick, while the others showed good golden splats. The drive on the cross-lode has broken into the drive where the lode functioned with Heldt's leader. There is nothing of any importance from any other part of the mine. The following is a copy of • the telegram
pent by the manager to the office at Auckland, this morning :— " Beef new winze 4 feet thick, but much split up. Stuff" in single stamper not showing so well. 401bs from middle stope on No. 9 reef.—Kobt. Comes." [The parcel from Wallis' was not broken out when the telegram was sent.] Gavin and party, tributers, crushed 150lbs of picked stone and specimens yesterday for the satisfactory yield of lOlozs 16dwts melted sold, and Kneebone and party, another lot of tributers, obtained 96ozs 2dwts melled gold from their crushing finished at the company's battery today.
