A telegram wais received by the Town Clerk-yesterday evening shortly before the; meeting of•: the -{Borough Council, which throws some light on the'£(3 which ;ifc was understood had been placed to the credit of the Borough as the balance of £960 subsidy after deductions for hospitals and charitable institutions. Thetelegrqin, was from the Secretary to the Treasury, in answer to a letter from the Town Clerk asking for an explanation of the if em, and it stated that it was money derived from or received in the Resident Magistrate's Court as fees, on publicans' licenses, and remitted in error to Wellington. At hearing this telegram Councillors became .elated ', apparently satisfied, that because the bank had been under a misapprehension and had mislead the Council as to what the item of £5 was,the £960 of subsidy was not endapgered. This may be the case:" we hope the sequel will prove ifc to be so. It certainly looks suspicious still,; that other local bodies should have received their subsidies —some of themMn full —and that the Borough should be kept out of its share. Another singular phase of the business is the fact that the bank people should have

been informed that the £6 was the balance oF subsidy and that the remainder had been retailed us the Borough contribution for the objects named. The telegram has cleared up but a very small affair. The subsidy payable by the Government for - the six months has been paid to all local bodies in the Thames District excepting the Borough, and throughout tne'Colony; we believe, the local bodies ha*v^ JfjE^iVed' the sums to which they became entitled. The non-payment of the Thames Boroagh's portion is singular, and, aa we thi&ky suspicious.
