PIAKO.
; I paid a visit to the workings in the No, 7 level of this mine this morning, and found that sin ice my last visit to the same, level the works had been pushed ahead to a most appreciable extents the-drives-being timbered as close up,to the faces as possible, and the stopes, etc., made secure. There did .'not appear to be any change in the big face, the reef maintaining its pro- : mising appearance while colors of gold are occasionally: seen. There does not appear to be any change in the size, and the drive is carried along the whole width of the lode. A stone showing a considerable" quantity of gold was broken out and, taken to the surface this morning. It was a noticable fact that the flow of water has greatly diminished and it* is W be hoped that when the shaft is deeper! this level;will be comparatively dry. In the drive on the Queen of Beauty side of the shaft good ciushing dirt is being broken as well as in the stopes on the. same side of the shaft. The quartz is of a heavy crystallized character, fid shows ruby silver and other minerals. The drive on the Bird id Hand reef is proceeding, and it will be on the shot of gold in a fe«v weeks—three or four at the outside. Tlie, tributerß are work-, ing away, but are meeting with poor average success as yet, and the contractors appear to be doing pretty well. The first retorting of the amalgam resulting from the stuff crushed '"it' 1 the 'big battery was completed to-day for the yield of 284 ounces. This is the result of the treatment of 604 tons of stone, and the yield is about up to the expectations formed concerning it. _...._. , . r:
