CHRISTCHURHC.
This day,
The magisterial work at Christchurch has become so heavy that Mr Whiteford, E.M. of Kaiapoi, has been appointed assistant E.M.
At a meeting of shareholders. of the Permanent Investment Association, it transpired that the defalcations of Herdson, late chief clerk, amounted to nearly six thousand pounds instead of six hundred, as previously stated. The defalca-
tions extended over a period of five years, during a part of which time the Association held a guarantee policy for £1000 in the Australian Alliance Company, but as the claim under it had not been made as required, within three months of the expiration of the policy, the Company refused to pay. This was unfavorably commented on at the meeting. The question of sending a detective to arrest Herdson, who is living near San Franciso, was left to the decision of the .directors.
