EXPLANATION.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,—'Will you kindly allovr me' space in your journal to make a few remarks concerning the late controversy, which the Thames Advertiser refused to do ' after writing a most unfair and untruthful article in" Friday's issue regarding me.' In commenting on the various writers the editor says, "writers like Mrs MeManus ought to be careful," thereby insinuating that my letters were personal and offensive. He seems to overlook the fact that it is he who has exceeded the bounds of truth and honor by daring to mix up my name with those writers whom he condemns, though at the same time would not dare to name in his ' article. From the manner in which he speaks of anonymous writers finding it difficult to hide their real names from the public, one v ould imagine I sought such shelter. It is not so. I sent my name with both letters. My reason for acknowledging publicly the letter signed "Mercy" was not, as this high-minded editor says, pleasure at the first production, but as a proof that I had nothing to do with " Charity," which appeared next day, and which I got the credit of writing. When I took up the pen it was to plead Father Nivard's cause without insult or injury to any person. Mr Mcllhone and I differ widejy on this point, and I hope my side may win, but I would consider it most unladylike to interfere with the business or private character of any man, especially one who has been more friend than jfoe since I have been acquainted with him. I was quite prepared to write on behalf of Father Nivard, but totally unprepared to attack gentlemen who are weir able to handle each other. I fail to see by what right the editor of the Thames Advertiser dragged my name into his leading, article, or made me the subject of a quarrel in which he well knew I took no part; and I intend to inquire further into it, as it is not the first time the Advertiser wronged me, but I am determined it will be the last. I can assure the editor of the Thames Advertiser that if I wanted an opinion of my writings I would go to a more able, honorable man, and not to the person who, in an underhand, insinuating manner, would try to lay the blame (if blame there was) on the weakest party. ? On reading this article I thought myself 4 that the editor did not know the writer . of "Charity;" you may imagine- my surprise and disgust to find he knew all about it and had the proofs in his possession. If the editor of the Thames Advertiser has any regret for inserting those very personal letters, let him address ' himself to those who may deserve it. I would not allow a better man to misrepresent my words or actions. I warn him to be more careful in future when using my name in print; as for his excuse for want of gallantry, it is quite excusable where, as in this case, one spark of manliness is not to be found.-— Thanking you for the space accorded, I am, respectfully yours, . H. McManus.
