PORT CHALMERS.
.Wednesday.
Arrived : The 'barquentine May, from the Mauritius. She brings 6;573 packages of sugar for Wellington.
The ship Duke of Sutherland, from Sydney for London, put into Port Chalmers, having encountered a terrific gale on March 26th, in latitude .48.43 south, longitude 171 west, at 6.30 p.m. The sea pooped, carrying away the binnacle, skylight, poop ladder, and everything moveable ; bent in the stern window, filled the cabin and main deck up to the rail, washed away the wheel, carrying two men with it. One, named Frank Hochter, a Eussian, was drowned, and the second was washed onboard. Cap* tain Lontil was washed overboard, and was only saved by his coat catching in the main brace bumpkin, breaking his left collarbone and ribs. The gale moderated on March 26th, and the ship bore up for Otago, and arrived off the Heads on the evening of the 6th, was driven off by a S.W. gale, and made the land yesterday, and was towed in this afternoon.. Dr Drysdale reports that Captain Lontil is in a fair way for recovery. The ship was strained tremendously, ■' .■" '- ■ ,
