At the opening of the annual session of the Philosophical Institute, Dr Haast, in his presidental address, gave an account of the discovery of some remarkable an* eient rock paintings in the Weka Pass ranges. He exhibited careful drawings of them made by S. S. Cousins. Some of the rock paintings are 15 feet long; they represent animals of foreign countries, weapons, and dresses of semi-civilized people; underneath them are characters like those of the Tamil language, resemb- j ling those on an ancient bell found in the; North;Jsland. : ; - '■

In the Supreme Court to-day, in fthe case of Pooley and Bramball, of the; English Cricketers, charged with malicious injury to property, no new evidence: was adduced, and the accused were found not guilty. Sykes and Falloon were also found not guilty of forgery.

The Board of Governors of Canterbury College have decided to advertise for a lady principal for the Girls' High School •—£4 so per year and a bonus 5s for each pupil. Also toask the Government for an endowment of five thousand acres of agricultural lands for School Boards. They have appointed a committee to select a farm for the purpose of an agricultural school.
