o This day. The annual meeting of the North Otago T.urf Club commenced to-day under most favorable circumstances. The attendance was large; the weather gloriously fine. ' Selling Back of 40 soys, mile and a quarter; - Miss Els wick, 1;: Malabar, 2; Six horses started. Miss Elswick led, with Merry Monarch second r for about, a mile. Steamer then challenged her, and' beat her on the post by half a length—f2' ( mins 26? sees. McKay:entered a protest against Steamer's receiving the stakes, on the grounds of jostling by Allan, rider of Steamer. The stewards sustained the. protest, disqualified Steamer, and awarded the stakes to Miss Elswick. *' Nobth Otago Tubf Club Handicap, 200 soys, sweepstakes of 5 soys ; secondhorse to receive 20 aovs ; -thirds horse 10 soys; distance 2 miles. Temple ton, 1; Guy Fawkes, 2i< Fishhook? /scratched. Betting 6t04 on Guy. Considerable excite* ment over this race,,as both horses h«d been backed heavily. Templeton's form when stripped was simply perfection, but Guy seemed to be hardly up to the mark. Directly the flag fell Guy made the run* ning at a terrific pace until entering the straight for the first time. On passing the stand Templeton had crawled up until he was only half a length behind The two horses raced together until the second mile from home, when Rowlands called upon Templeton* and he responded gamely, entering the straight half a length ahead of Guy. This order was main* tamed until the rails were reached, when Guy made a desperate , effort to get on evenlermswith Templeton twelvo lengths from home, but the latter passed the post a winner by a length and a-half amid tremendous cheering. Time, 3mins. apises. . :- ' Tbadesmen's Handicap, of 50 soys., distance 1 mile and a-balf. Six started. Titania, 1. A well-contested race. Won by three lengths. Time, 9mins. oOsecs.
