KARAKA.
In this district mining operations con- J tinue to be carried on in the, same style that they have been fqr two or - three years back, but - notwithstanding, that several parties appear to be doing " pretty well. The City of Manchester shareholders have recently had one Or * two payable crushings, and at present they are sinking the shaft. 1 his' work when completed will greatly facilitate the opening up: of the mine and: the - development of the lode. . The' Little Lizzie, which for some months past has eajoyed^the prestige, of being, the best gold producing mine in the > district,' is not in such a good position as it was.be- '• fore, the late heavy rains, whick caused .an Extremely heavy slip to come into the,,workings .where the reef..was being worked to the best advantage. The shareholders are now endeavoring to drive along the side of this slip to-get at the lode again, -but. this is a work of great . difficulty. Some time ago they commenced- driving, a lower level,- but. the; ground proving hard they were compelled to desist. Further up the tramway is the Lord Nelson claim, how worked on tribute by Somervel and ..party, but of . late it has not been paying, although, half an ..ounce, to. the. ton would, pay we 11... Some of the'party are about toreliriquisli c their interests. .The Victory,, shareholders, Scott and party/are doing pretty well. The Una mine, now entirely worked by tnibutersrjs "still yielding a little, gold. The .turning, of the .Water _, Supply into 5 the creek enables:"tHose£ batteries supplied with- wheels to crush' - cheaply, and. several of. them, are kept pretty constantly employed: 'Of late/ a good deal of prospecting.has been going on, and small parcel* of gold have been lodged.in the Banks froni time to time as_. the result. ■ 'ri -~ r-:-' ■■• ■ :::-
