MOANATAIRI.

. .I,visited this mine this morning, and after a rather dirty descent' of some minutes reached the eastern drive on the No. 9 reef, from whence all the rich stone is taken. Driving was proceeding in the side of the reef, which at the last point where the whole face was visible did not seem to have decreased the slightest in size, while' some fine patches of gold: were visible here and there. Mounting-on the stoping stage I was able to see the lode tomuch better advantage. Gold tfas showing strongly,' some exceedingly rich patches which would certainly not have disgraced the Caledonian ''' lode being visible". These patches' were' bands of gold varying in breadth from four to six inches lying across the lode, and it' >was difficult toj ace.a. particle of.quartz, in some of thepi the whole patch being ' one mass of shining yellow metal. Mr , "Owner informed me thijt yesterday breakjtng down was resumed; and as the, result •pf it about 4cwt of specimens were to hand last night. They were qiiite'as rich «fs any taken out during last week. In company with the manager I also visited the lode in the western drive which has been looking pretty well during the last

day or two, though, of course, nothing like the other. A close inspection disclosed a little gold in two or three places. I did not visit the other five drives worked by the company's men, but was told that nothing of importance had transpired in connection with them. A start was made yesterday at crushing some of the specimens with the siqgle stamper, and a large quantity of amalgam was the result. The crushing of general stuff is looking very well.
