J. S. Bain, late clerk of the Waimate Road Board, lias been committed for embezzling £500 of the Board funds.
The Times this morning says :—"We learn that a writ bas been issued by the Court of Queen's Bench, and received in the colony by the Californian mail- a few day 9 ago, served by Messrs Brogden on the Hon. Mr Ormond for damage arising out of a breach of the immigration agreement of 1872. The writ names all the members of the Fox-Vogel Government of that .year, whose names appear on the records of the day as the Hons. W. Fox, Gisborne, Julius Vogel, G.M.G., D. McLean, W. Beeves, W v Hall, and H. T. Miller. The writ also, for some reason, includes the names of Messrs Seweli, Dillon Bell, and Waterhouse, but for what reason does^not appear. We hear that Sir Julius Vogel will be requested to instruct a solicitor to appear for all the defendants."
