County Works at Ohinemuri.
During the visit of /the County Chairman and Surveyor to Ohihemuri, two contracts were let, the one for making a bridge across the tidal creek at Paeroa, and the other for the construction of swamp crossings. The following were' the tenders received:—Bridge at Paeroa, J. Thompson £42 10s, McAndrew£47 and Lavery £54. Swamp crossings, Logan £15, O'Neil £17 10s, Keleher £30, Stewart and Martin £41; ditto without drains £29 10; O. Sorenson £45, ditto without drains £35. For the first men-; tioned work Mr Thompson's tender, and for the second Mr Logan's tender were accepted. The bridge at Paeroa is a;very necessary work. The following are copies of two memorials for works in this, district which are to be presented at the next meeting of the County Council:— i " Paeroa, Ohinemuri,- 16th February, 1877. —To the Chairman and members of the Thames County Council.—Gentlemen. —The undersigned beg to draw t your attention to the very dangerous condition of the wharf at Paeroa. It has been a public wharf, free of all charges for some' years; though constructed by private en-: terprise, and we think that the County authorities should now take it over, and put it in complete repair. Situated at ! the head of the navigation of, the Ghinemuri .River it is absolutely necessary that something, should be done before thewinter Jfreshets set in ; and we. propose, upon condition that the wharf shall remain, as heretofore, free to the public,: to; ask the inhabitants of Paeroa and Mackaytown to subscribe one half of the expense of putting it into an efficient state of. repair.-—We: are, gentlemen, your obedient servants, —Albert J. Allom, J.P., Edward Bullock, John Goonanj F. Lipsey, Thomas Cashen, Henry Johnson, William Marsh, O. Sorenson, Thomas Logan, John McGeehrie, J. M. Carter, John Keleher, William C. Martin, Michael! Coleman, Carroll Nash, Thomas Shaw,; Hunia, Mongatanguta, Katoa,, A. Barchard, E. Moore." "Paeroa, 15th February, 1877.—T0 the Chairman and County Councillors of Thames.—Gentlemen,—'Permit me therewith, respectfully and humbly, to draw your attention to the roadway in Paeroa exactly opposite my premises. As some members of your Council have this day inspected the position referred to I need scarcely urge its being secured at once, as it is obvious, it not attended to, the main thoroughfare will suffer material damage from the flow of water at present running, and likely to increase during the winter months. Previous to the late slips I intended constructing a bridge on the roadway at this place (by permission), and for that purpose got on the ground an ample supply of strong timber, which I hereby offer to you (free of cost) for use if necessary to the completion of the bridge, culvert, or whatever your Council may deem expedient to erect. Trusting this matter shall receive your early attention, I have the honor to remain, Mr Chairman and Councillors, your humble servant, J. M. Eobson,"
