WELLINGTON.

Thursday.

The Government have completed with the Bank of New Zealand arrangements for advances to the extent of one million, which, "with, the half-million recently borrowed in Australia, will, it is understood, enable the Government to avoid resorting to the London market for two

years. The balance-sheet to be submitted at the. annual meeting of the New Zealand Times Company this month stows a profit on the year of £1,000, besides wiping off a loss of £2,000 on the previous year. The directors' report states this to be the result of six months' working under the new management. This day.

About two this morning a fire was discovered in the hold of the ship Himalaya alongside the wharf. The smbke and heat were so great tihat it was impossible to go down the hatches' to work, and an entrance was effected to the after hold ', whel"e the fire was breaking, through' the cabin. For several, hours there Were four streams of water kept playing into the hold before the final extinguishment of the fire. -The ship's watchman was picked up dead be-, low.. It is supposed he fell down the hatch and then got smothered. Two men of the central brigade were also picked -up senseless in the hold from suffocation, but they recovered. A great portion of the cargo had been landed. It is -impossible at present to estimate the damage, which must be considerable.
