Tuesday. Mr Edward pearce, M.H.R. for the city, resigns j and leaves for England by the March mail. '■ The following are the principal amounts won at the recent race meeting, and paid over since :—Mr Eedwood, £375 ; Mr .Kay, £237; Mr Giliigan, £140: Mr Durie, £100; Mr Walker, £100 j Mr Drown, £80; Mr Eraser, £70. The total amount paid was £1,147. It was agreed that the amount of the next year's cup money should be £500, and there were 25 and 22 nominations received respectively for the Wellington Derby of 1878 and 1879.
The first sitting of the Conference of Senior Constabulary Officers' to arrange the basis and details of the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern forces is being held to-day at the Government Buildings, under the presidency of Col. Moule. The members are Superintendents Shearman, Canterbury; Weldon, Otago ; Inspectors Tuke, Taranaki; Aitcheson, Wellington 1; Inspectors Brbham and Thomson, A.C. This day. John McCann, recently sentenced for rape, received thirty lashes this morning. Owen Kane for a similar offence received twenty-five lashes. Both men suffered severely, groaning loudly. The original : scheme for forming an opposition gas company is revived. Arrived: Wakatipu, from Sydney. Passengers, for Auckland : Mr and Mrs Darey, Mr Bromfield. The Hon. G. McLean and Dr. Lemon have returned by the Wakatipu.
