RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THIS DAY.
(Before H. Goldsmith and E. W. Puckey, Esqs., J'sjP.) LA.ECENT.
Edgar Field, James Wilson and. Edward Eevan (three boys) were charged that they ,did- unlawfully steal from the garden of David Leith, at Kirikiri, certain fruit, to wit, plums of the value of 10s on the 22nd inst.
The defendants pleaded guilty. Mr Sub-Inspector Bullen stated that Mr Leith, the owner of the garden, had seen the defendants land on the wharf, and when became back from his dinner he saw some trees which had been covered with plums, stripped. He saw the defendants carrying a bag, from which they were evidently taking fruit and eating it. The police had continual complaints made to them of boys stealing fruit, and he thought one conviction would have a salutary effect in. preventing such depredations in future. ,
The Bench asked what was the *ge of the defendants, and .was informed that Field was 17, and the two cithers 15 years of age. The Bench then said that if they had been younger they would have been flogged. They would be each sentenced to seven days' imprisonment with hard labour.
Court adjourned.
