WELLINGTON.
Monday.
It has been a fine day for the regatta, particularly for the sailing races, but a little too rough for rowing. The principal events were :—
First-class Yacht Bace, 20 miles; first prize, £25 and a cup. It was won by the Secret (Auckland) easily; Minehaha ("Wellington), second; and the others nowhere.
Coasters' Eace, 20 miles; first prize, £25 and a cup. This was won by the Transit (Auckland) ; Clio (Wellington), second;. Cynthia (Wellington), third.
Whaleboat Eace of 3 miles. This was a very exciting race. There were three entries. Eetting was 3 and 4 against the field on Danger (rowed by a Timaru crew). The Bradleys (Danger) took the lead,, and kept it nearly the whole three miles/ but rounding the last buoy the Black Diamond (rowed by the coalheavers) made a rush up, and apparently there was a. foul.* The black Diamond was then seen taking the lead, and Danger rowing one o-r shor£. A protest was entered. The matter is not settled yet.All three came in within a length of each other. .
For the four-oar inrigged race only two came to the scratch—the Timaru crew in a local boat, the Maud, and the Dolly Varden crew in the Transit. The Dolly's crew being heavier than the other, were at a disadvantage, the weather being rough, and after going the first mile they had to give in, being nearly swamped, and only one man- in the boat could swim.
A number of races were postponed, which wili be rowed to-morrow.
In the second class yacht race a boat belonging to the telegraph steamer Agnes capsized just off Somos' Island. A pleasure boat with ladies aboard picked up three men. The Hinemoa saw the accident, and turned round immediately, and got the boat in tow. One of the three died oh board the steamer. Five minutes after a ciy was raised on board the steamer that another boat was down. Full steam was turned on at once, and a boat wa» lowered amidst casks, oars, &c. Three men were saved and two drowned from the boat of the ship Avalanche. Both boats went down like a stone.
