PIGEONGRAMS.

OHHTEMUBI.

(from ottb own correspondent.)

Paeroa, this day, 12 noon.

Paeroa Annual Sports.

It is with the greatest difficulty that I am enabled to send you a report of the proceedings held on the Ist inst. There were no programmes provided by the committee, arfd it was next to impossible to obtain any information as to the entries for the different events. There were 11 events contested during the day, and considering the very small prizes offered it is a matter of surprise that there was such eager competition. Throughout the day Mr James Mackay, who was patron of the sports, was prominent everywhere, and.it is solely owing to his exertions that the sports were conducted with any degree of success. The only other member of the Committee who did active service on this occasion was Mr R. Cashell, and as for the rest they were busily engaged in attending to business behind their respective bars. Maiden Eace : Ist prize £3. 2nd £1. Takerei's Eana 1 Parra's Mira 2 •W. Nichol's Stranger ... ... 0 | |tiirama's Kangaroo ... ... 0 For the Paeroa Cup there were 4 entries, and the prizes were : Ist prize £5, 2nd prize £110s. Paraku's Government 1 Haora's Melbourne 2 Hori Mori's Te Wehi 0 A. J. Allom's Johnny 0 Pony Race : Ist prize, £2 10s, 2nd £1. There were five entries, and after a very exciting race, Hirawa's Luna landed the winner with Hori Mori's Te Wehi second. The HrBDLE Eace, Ist prize £5, 2nd £1 10s, was won by Paraku's Government, and Paora's Morning Light came a very close second. For the Consolation Stakes there were seven entries, Haora's Melbourne being winner of the prize, £4. Wrestling Match, Collar and Elbow : Ist prize £2, 2nd £1. .After a keen contest J. Shaw was declared winne^.of first, and J. Blain second prize. ThV Maoris also had "a sftpjprate " takaro," when Paraku, a lithe arid active Nfttiyd, threw all bis opponents. ■--/' "^) \ 'IFhere were two other events, viz., a foot race of 2OO..yards, and hop, step and a jump. TeFaria won both, though there'was some^aispute about the latter match, and it was in some incomprehensible manner decided in favor of, IJiear, a professional—Rycroft. The Maoris throughout came off the victors.
