We are sorry to learn that notwithstanding the efforts of the Thames creditors, and the apparent disposition of the mortgagees to meet their wishes, there is not much chance of a speedy settlement of the Bright Smile affairs and the Waio-Karaka drainage question. The Queen of Beauty people object to the purchase of the winding gear by the association, and as the offer of £7000 includes this, (and was even regarded as a concession by the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company to include it) the prospect of a settlement seems as remote as ever. We are inclined to think there is some latent obstructive element that does not want to see a settlement arrived at. If this be correct it were better for the obstructives to avow themselves and save trouble to those who are working to bring about an equitable arrangement.
